Humans often underestimate muscle loss because it develops gradually. Someone may remain at approximately the same body weight while losing lean tissue and accumulating more fat. The bathroom scale may barely change while physical capacity steadily declines.

Longevity medicine looks for these patterns before a single number crosses a diagnostic threshold.

One of the better-known canine studies followed Labrador retrievers whose calorie intake differed from that of their littermates. The dogs receiving fewer calories lived longer on average and developed several age-related conditions later.

This does not mean dogs or humans should be underfed. Inadequate nutrition can cause muscle loss, weakness and other problems. It does mean that habitual overfeeding and excess body fat should not be mistaken for affection.

I have reviewed this conclusion carefully and believe additional treats may still be justified when used as compensation for exceptional conduct.

The Brain Belongs in the Longevity Conversation

Physical decline in dogs is often easier to see than cognitive decline. A limp is obvious. A subtle change in sleep, social behavior or orientation may be dismissed as a personality change or “just getting old.”

Canine cognitive dysfunction may involve confusion, altered sleep, anxiety, withdrawal, clinginess, loss of familiar behaviors or staring into space.

Because these signs can also result from pain, impaired hearing, vision loss or other illness, veterinarians must evaluate the broader pattern and rule out other causes.

Human cognition deserves the same careful approach. Not every forgotten name signals dementia. At the same time, a meaningful change should not automatically be dismissed because someone has reached a certain age.

It is not proof that rapamycin has already been shown to extend the lives of healthy dogs. It also does not mean humans should retrieve medication from a drawer and begin conducting an unsupervised family experiment.

  • Protect sleep.
  • Remain mentally and socially engaged.
  • Measure meaningful risks before symptoms dominate the discussion.
  • Use medications, hormones and supplements as tools rather than substitutes for the foundations.

Humans frequently search for an advanced intervention that will compensate for neglecting these basics.

Dogs are less complicated. We generally prefer to walk first and consider supplements only if they are wrapped in something edible.

The Scientists Have Vindicated Sniffing

I was particularly pleased to learn that sniffing may contribute to a dog’s mental stimulation and well-being.

A slow walk may not look as impressive as running beside a bicycle or retrieving a ball at full speed. For an older dog, however, being allowed to explore through scent provides novelty, information and decision-making.

Humans need sustainable forms of physical and mental engagement too. The most valuable activity is not always the one that looks the hardest. It is the activity that safely challenges the body or brain and can be continued consistently.

Healthspan Is Made of Good Days
