Hair Loss Assessment

What may be contributing to your hair thinning or shedding?

Hair loss is not one diagnosis. Gradual pattern thinning, sudden diffuse shedding, autoimmune hair loss, inflammatory scalp disease, hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, medications, rapid weight loss, and traction can look similar at first.

This assessment does not diagnose hair loss. It is designed to help identify patterns, recent changes, and other factors that may be useful to discuss with a clinician.
0 of 15 questions completed
1. What best describes what you are noticing?
2. How quickly did the change begin?
3. Where is the hair loss most noticeable?
4. Have any of these occurred during the last several months?

Diffuse shedding can begin weeks or months after the triggering event.

5. Have you lost a significant amount of weight recently?
6. How would you describe your current nutrition?
7. Have you been told you have any of the following?
8. Do any hormonal or reproductive changes apply to you?
9. Does thyroid disease or possible thyroid dysfunction apply to you?
10. Was a medication started, stopped, or changed before the hair loss began?

Optional: list medications or recent medication changes.

11. Does pattern hair loss run in your family?
12. Do you regularly wear hairstyles that place tension on the hair?
13. Are you experiencing any scalp or body-hair symptoms?
14. Is there a credible possible exposure to heavy metals or another toxic source?
15. Have you already tried treatment for hair loss?

Your Hair Loss Assessment

Your answers do not establish a diagnosis. They identify patterns and possible contributors that may help organize a conversation with your physician or dermatologist.

What happens next?

Hair loss is best treated according to its cause rather than according to the latest product being marketed for hair growth.

A clinical evaluation may include a review of the pattern and timing of hair loss, scalp examination, medications, weight and nutrition changes, family history, hormonal and thyroid factors, and targeted laboratory testing when appropriate.

The goal is not to accumulate hair products or supplements. It is to identify the diagnosis, correct reversible contributors, and protect follicles that can still be protected.

Educational use only. This assessment is not a diagnosis, medical examination, or individualized treatment plan. Hair loss that is patchy, inflammatory, rapidly progressive, associated with significant scalp symptoms, or suggestive of scarring should be evaluated promptly by an appropriately qualified clinician. Prescription medications, off-label treatments, supplements, and procedures should be selected and monitored individually.
