What Vitamins Should I Take? An Evidence-Based Guide to Supplements, Nutrient Gaps, Testing & Safety

Walk through a pharmacy, grocery store or supplement website and there is no shortage of products promising help with energy, sleep, stress, hormones, metabolism, memory, immunity, bone health, hair, digestion and healthy aging.

The more useful question is whether you need a supplement in the first place.

Vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements can serve an important purpose. A documented deficiency may need treatment. A diet that consistently falls short of an essential nutrient may need support. Age, pregnancy, medications, digestive disease, weight loss, food restrictions and certain medical conditions can also change nutritional needs. Some supplements have evidence for specific uses even when a classic deficiency is not present.

None of this creates a universal supplement list.

Some supplements are useful only in particular circumstances. Others are routinely taken without a clear indication. There are also situations in which testing or medical evaluation should come before supplementation.

The goal is to understand why a supplement is being used, whether the evidence fits that purpose, and whether it makes sense for the person taking it.

One-Minute Read

There is no standard list of vitamins or supplements that every healthy adult should take. Nutritional needs vary with diet, age, life stage, medications, medical history, absorption and, in some cases, laboratory findings.

Certain supplements have well-established uses. Iron can correct iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 is essential when dietary intake or absorption is inadequate. Folic acid has an established role before conception and during early pregnancy. Protein supplements can be useful when food intake does not provide enough protein. Creatine has substantial evidence behind its use with resistance training, including growing evidence in older adults. Omega-3 supplementation has specific nutritional and clinical uses.

Symptoms alone are much less reliable. Fatigue does not identify a B12 deficiency. Muscle cramps do not establish magnesium deficiency. Hair loss does not automatically call for biotin, and brain fog is not a diagnosis that can be treated with a B-complex.

Start with the reason for taking the supplement. Consider the diet, the evidence, possible testing, medications and safety. Food should provide the nutritional foundation whenever practical, with supplements used to fill genuine gaps or serve a defined purpose.

Do I Need Supplements?

Some people do, while others can meet most of their nutritional needs through food. The answer depends on what is being consumed, absorbed and required at a particular point in life.

The body needs vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and many other dietary components. Food supplies these nutrients together with protein, fiber, fats, carbohydrates and a wide range of naturally occurring compounds. A capsule is sometimes useful, but it is only one way to supply a nutrient.

Supplementation becomes more relevant when food is not meeting a need, absorption is impaired, requirements have changed, a deficiency has been identified, or a particular supplement has evidence for the outcome being pursued.

Six reasons a supplement may make sense

1. A deficiency has been identified.
Iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies should be addressed appropriately. In these circumstances, a supplement may be part of treatment rather than general wellness.

2. Your usual diet leaves a predictable gap.
A strict vegan diet requires a dependable source of vitamin B12. Someone who rarely eats seafood may consume little EPA and DHA. A person who avoids dairy and other calcium-rich foods needs another reliable source of calcium.

3. Your nutritional needs have changed.
Pregnancy changes requirements for several nutrients. Aging can affect appetite, total food intake, absorption, muscle mass and bone health. Menopause brings additional attention to bone, muscle and body composition.

4. A medication or medical condition affects intake, absorption or metabolism.
Gastrointestinal disease, bariatric surgery and certain medications can affect nutrient status. The appropriate response depends on the nutrient involved and the underlying clinical situation.

5. You are eating substantially less food.
Illness, poor appetite, intentional calorie restriction and significant weight loss can make adequate protein, fiber, vitamin and mineral intake more difficult.

6. A supplement has evidence for a specific use.
Not every useful supplement is correcting a deficiency. Creatine is a good example. Its use with resistance training is based on its effects on muscle energy metabolism, training capacity and adaptation, not on diagnosing a “creatine deficiency.”

Do I Need a Multivitamin?

A multivitamin can be useful when someone's diet is inconsistent, calorie intake is low, appetite is poor or entire food groups are routinely avoided. Certain life stages may also make a multivitamin appropriate.

It still cannot reproduce a healthy diet. Multivitamins vary considerably in both formulation and dose. Some provide amounts close to established daily requirements, while others contain several times the Daily Value of selected nutrients or add herbs and other ingredients that extend well beyond basic nutritional coverage.

It is also important to look at everything being taken together. Someone using a multivitamin, B-complex, immune formula and sleep product may unknowingly consume high total amounts of vitamin B6, zinc, vitamin A or other nutrients because the same ingredients appear in several products.

A multivitamin is most useful when it fills identifiable gaps without creating unnecessary duplication.

A Practical Vitamin and Nutrient Guide

The following guide covers several of the nutrients and nutritional supplements that come up most often in clinical conversations. It is not intended as a list of products everyone should take.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for calcium absorption, bone health and muscle physiology. Severe deficiency is clinically important. At the same time, routine screening of every healthy adult and increasingly aggressive efforts to push blood levels higher have moved beyond what current evidence supports for general disease prevention.

The Endocrine Society's 2024 clinical practice guideline recommends against routine vitamin D screening in generally healthy adults who do not otherwise have an indication for testing. It also advises most healthy adults younger than 75 not to routinely supplement above established dietary recommendations solely for disease prevention.

There are still good reasons to measure vitamin D in selected patients. Bone disease, abnormal calcium metabolism, malabsorption and other clinical circumstances can change the decision. Testing is most useful when the result is likely to affect treatment.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is required for normal blood formation, neurologic function and DNA synthesis. It is naturally present in animal foods, which means people following a strict vegan diet need a dependable fortified-food or supplemental source.

Absorption can also become less efficient with age and may be affected by gastrointestinal disease or certain medications. Fatigue, numbness, cognitive changes and anemia can occur with B12 deficiency, but none is specific enough to diagnose it. When deficiency is plausible, laboratory evaluation is generally more informative than treating the symptom by guesswork.

Folate

Folate is essential for cell division and DNA synthesis and has particular importance around conception and early pregnancy. Adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects.

Supplement form also deserves some perspective. Methylfolate can be useful in particular formulations and clinical circumstances, but the word “methylated” on a label does not make a product universally superior to other appropriate forms of folate.

Iron

Iron is essential for hemoglobin formation, oxygen transport and normal muscle function. Deficiency can contribute to fatigue, weakness and reduced exercise tolerance and may occur with heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, gastrointestinal blood loss, frequent blood donation or impaired absorption.

Unlike many general wellness supplements, iron is often better approached with laboratory information. A CBC, ferritin and other measures of iron status can help establish whether iron is actually low. When deficiency is found, the underlying cause should also be considered. Menstrual blood loss, poor intake, malabsorption and gastrointestinal bleeding are not interchangeable problems simply because they can all produce low iron stores.

Excess iron can also be harmful, which is another reason routine “just in case” supplementation is not a good default.

Calcium

Calcium is essential to bone, muscle and nerve function, but supplementation should usually begin with a review of how much calcium is already being consumed. Dairy products, fortified foods, canned fish with bones, calcium-set tofu and selected vegetables can make substantial contributions.

If dietary intake is inadequate, a supplement can be used to fill the shortfall rather than automatically providing the entire daily amount. Bone health also depends on more than calcium intake. Protein, vitamin D, resistance and impact exercise when appropriate, hormone status, medications, smoking, alcohol use, fall risk and underlying medical conditions all influence long-term bone health.

Magnesium

Magnesium participates in hundreds of biochemical reactions and contributes to muscle and nerve function, glucose regulation, blood pressure, protein production and bone metabolism. It is also frequently promoted for sleep, anxiety, constipation and muscle cramps, sometimes with more certainty than the evidence allows.

Poor sleep or a muscle cramp does not establish magnesium deficiency. Those symptoms have many possible causes. Magnesium may still be useful for a particular person, but the reason for using it should be more specific than matching a symptom to a social-media list.

Good food sources include nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains and leafy green vegetables. When a supplement is used, the form and dose can affect absorption and gastrointestinal tolerance. Higher supplemental amounts can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. Impaired kidney function requires additional caution because the kidneys normally help regulate magnesium balance.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found primarily in fish and seafood. They have important roles in cell membranes and cardiovascular and metabolic physiology. People who regularly eat salmon, sardines, trout, herring and other fatty fish may already obtain meaningful amounts from food, while those who rarely eat seafood have a different nutritional picture.

The reason for supplementing should guide the choice of product and dose. General dietary support is not the same as treating markedly elevated triglycerides, and prescription omega-3 therapy is not interchangeable with an over-the-counter fish-oil supplement.

When a supplement is used, the actual EPA and DHA content, purity, oxidation, source and medication history are more informative than the total amount of “fish oil” displayed on the front of the bottle.

Protein

Protein belongs in a supplement discussion even though it is first and foremost a component of food. Fish, eggs, poultry, meat, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, soy foods, beans and lentils can all provide substantial amounts.

Protein powders become useful when convenience, reduced appetite, travel, training demands or calorie restriction make it difficult to reach an appropriate intake with meals alone. This deserves particular attention during aging and substantial weight loss because weight loss can include muscle as well as fat.

Creatine

Creatine has traditionally been associated with bodybuilding and sports performance, although its physiology and clinical research extend well beyond competitive athletes. It helps regenerate ATP during activities that require rapid energy, and creatine monohydrate is among the most extensively studied sports-nutrition supplements.

Research in older adults has increasingly examined strength, lean tissue and physical function. The best-established use remains alongside resistance training, where it can support the adaptations created by the training itself.

Creatine can increase serum creatinine because creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine. A modest increase should not automatically be interpreted as loss of kidney function. Existing kidney disease or an unexplained change in renal markers still requires appropriate medical evaluation.

Fiber

Fiber supplements can be useful, but the diet should be reviewed first. Vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and intact whole grains provide different types of fiber along with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

Supplemental fiber may be helpful when dietary intake remains inadequate. Intake can require extra attention during calorie restriction and GLP-1 treatment because total food volume may fall considerably.

Probiotics

The word “probiotic” covers many different organisms, strains and formulations. Evidence for one strain used for one clinical indication cannot automatically be applied to another strain or product simply because both are sold as probiotics.

Fermented foods can be part of a healthy diet, but they are not necessarily equivalent to probiotic products that contain specific organisms studied in clinical trials. A useful evaluation considers the organism, strain when relevant, dose, intended use and supporting evidence.

Zinc, Iodine and Selenium

Zinc, iodine and selenium are essential nutrients, but excessive intake can create problems. Prolonged high-dose zinc can impair copper absorption. Iodine is necessary for thyroid hormone production, yet excessive intake can disrupt thyroid function in susceptible people. Chronic selenium excess can cause hair and nail changes, gastrointestinal symptoms and neurologic problems.

Recommended amounts exist for a reason. Essential nutrients still have dose ranges beyond which benefit can give way to harm.

Symptoms People Often Blame on Vitamin Deficiencies

Symptoms can suggest a direction for further evaluation, but few common symptoms identify a particular nutrient deficiency on their own.

Fatigue

Iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, inadequate calorie intake and poor nutrition can contribute to fatigue. The same symptom can occur with sleep apnea, insomnia, thyroid disease, depression, medication effects, infection, other forms of anemia, cardiopulmonary disease, menopause, excessive alcohol intake and overtraining.

If fatigue persists, repeatedly adding supplements without examining other possible causes can delay a more useful evaluation.

Hair Loss

Iron status, protein intake, zinc and other nutritional factors can influence hair growth. Thyroid disease, androgen-related hair loss, autoimmune conditions, major illness, rapid weight loss, menopause and genetic pattern hair loss are also common considerations.

Biotin became strongly associated with hair products because true biotin deficiency can cause hair and skin changes. Deficiency is uncommon, and high-dose biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests. Hair loss by itself is not a good reason to assume that more biotin is needed.

Muscle Cramps

Magnesium is frequently suggested for muscle cramps, although cramps also occur with exercise, dehydration, medication use, nerve disorders, vascular disease and other conditions. Magnesium may help in selected circumstances, but response to a supplement does not establish that every cramp was caused by magnesium deficiency.

Brain Fog

Vitamin B12 and other nutritional deficiencies can affect cognition, but “brain fog” has a much broader differential. Poor sleep, sleep apnea, medications, alcohol, depression, anxiety, menopause, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance and illness can all affect attention, memory and mental clarity.

Persistent cognitive change deserves more thought than automatically adding a B-complex.

Low Mood or Irritability

Nutrition is one part of brain health, but persistent depression, major mood changes, severe anxiety or symptoms that interfere with daily life should not be reduced to a vitamin-deficiency checklist. These symptoms deserve appropriate assessment, particularly when they are new or worsening.

When Should You Test Before Taking a Supplement?

Laboratory testing is most useful when the result is likely to change what happens next. Ordering a large panel without deciding how high, low or normal results would affect the plan often produces information without improving the decision.

Iron

Iron is one of the clearest examples of a nutrient for which testing often belongs near the beginning of the evaluation. Depending on the situation, testing may include a CBC, ferritin, serum iron, transferrin or total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation.

The pattern of results and the clinical context are more useful than an isolated value. Menstrual blood loss, occult gastrointestinal bleeding, poor intake and malabsorption can all affect iron status, while chronic inflammation can complicate interpretation of some iron markers.

Vitamin B12

Serum B12 is commonly used to evaluate B12 status. When the laboratory result and clinical picture do not agree, methylmalonic acid and other markers may sometimes provide additional information.

Vitamin D

The standard laboratory measure is 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The Endocrine Society's 2024 guideline does not support routine population-wide screening of otherwise healthy adults. Testing remains appropriate in selected clinical circumstances when the result can reasonably affect management.

Broad “Micronutrient” Panels

Large nutritional panels can generate extensive reports, but more data do not automatically provide better answers. Results still need to be interpreted alongside diet, medical history, medications, symptoms and the limitations of the individual tests being used.

A borderline laboratory value should not automatically become a diagnosis or a permanent supplement prescription.

A practical question before ordering a nutrient test:

What would you do differently if the result were low, normal or high? A test is more useful when each possible result has a meaningful effect on the next decision.

Food First Does Not Mean Supplements Never

A food-first approach is sometimes mistaken for an argument against supplementation. It is simply recognition that whole foods provide more than isolated vitamins and minerals.

Lentils provide folate along with fiber, protein and minerals. Salmon provides EPA and DHA along with protein and other nutrients. Yogurt supplies calcium together with protein and other components of food. Pumpkin seeds provide magnesium as part of a much broader nutritional package.

For many nutrients, the first step is to determine whether an appropriate diet can reasonably meet the need. When it cannot, or when a specific supplement serves another evidence-based purpose, supplementation can be entirely appropriate.

A supplement should fill a nutritional gap or serve a defined purpose. It is less useful when it becomes a way to leave an otherwise poor diet unchanged.

Can You Take Too Many Vitamins?

Yes. Essential nutrients have physiological ranges, and excessive intake of some vitamins and minerals can cause toxicity or create new nutritional imbalances.

Nutrient Why Excess Can Matter
Vitamin A Excess preformed vitamin A can be toxic. High-dose preformed vitamin A is especially important to avoid during pregnancy unless medically directed.
Vitamin D Excessive supplementation can produce hypercalcemia and other complications.
Vitamin B6 Chronic high intake from supplements has been associated with sensory neuropathy.
Iron Too much can cause gastrointestinal toxicity and, at extreme doses, serious poisoning. Iron-overload disorders require particular caution.
Zinc High intake over time can impair copper absorption and create other problems.
Selenium Chronic excess can affect hair, nails, the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system.
Iodine Both inadequate and excessive intake can affect thyroid physiology.
Magnesium Higher supplemental amounts commonly cause diarrhea. More serious accumulation is a concern when kidney function is impaired.

Duplication across products is a common way to reach unexpectedly high doses. A multivitamin may contain B6, followed by more B6 in an energy product, sleep formula and B-complex. Each label may look reasonable when viewed alone, while the combined daily intake tells a different story.

Supplements Can Interact With Medications

Dietary supplements can have real pharmacologic effects. Some change medication absorption or metabolism, while others influence blood clotting, glucose, blood pressure, thyroid function or sedation.

Examples include:

  • Vitamin K and warfarin
  • Mineral supplements taken too close to certain antibiotics
  • Magnesium and some osteoporosis medications
  • St. John’s wort and numerous prescription drugs
  • High-dose omega-3 products in people taking anticoagulant medication
  • Supplements that lower glucose in someone already taking diabetes medication
  • Products with sedating effects taken alongside other sedatives

Supplements can also interfere with laboratory testing. High-dose biotin is one of the best-known examples.

A complete supplement list should be part of the medical record, particularly before surgery, during major medication changes, or when someone is being treated for cancer, significant cardiovascular disease, transplant-related conditions or other complex medical problems.

Supplement Needs Change With Age, Diet and Life Stage

Women

The label “women's vitamin” says very little about an individual's nutritional needs. A menstruating woman with heavy blood loss may require a very different approach to iron than a postmenopausal woman. Pregnancy changes considerations around folate, iodine, iron and other nutrients, while menopause brings greater attention to bone, muscle and body composition.

Life stage, diet and medical history provide more useful guidance than gendered packaging.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Menopause does not create a universal supplement prescription, but it does change several areas of health that deserve closer attention. Bone density, muscle mass, protein intake, resistance training, cardiovascular risk and metabolic health become increasingly important during midlife.

Calcium adequacy and vitamin D are relevant to bone health. Protein and resistance training help preserve muscle, and creatine may be useful for selected women, particularly when combined with resistance exercise. These measures sit alongside appropriate evaluation of menopausal symptoms, hormone therapy when indicated, osteoporosis risk and cardiovascular risk rather than replacing them.

Men

Men are heavily marketed supplements for testosterone, prostate health, muscle gain and sexual function. Symptoms attributed to low testosterone deserve a broader assessment that can include sleep, body composition, medications, alcohol intake, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk and properly obtained hormone testing when appropriate.

Iron also deserves a different approach in adult men than in many menstruating women. Routine iron supplementation is generally not an appropriate default unless there is an identified reason for it.

Adults Over 50

Aging can reduce appetite and total food intake, and vitamin B12 absorption from food may become less efficient. At the same time, preserving muscle becomes increasingly important for strength, glucose disposal, fall prevention and independence.

Protein intake, resistance training, bone health, vitamin B12, calcium intake and vitamin D when appropriate all deserve attention. A multivitamin may help when dietary coverage is inconsistent, but it cannot replace nutritious food or the physical stimulus required to preserve strength.

Vegetarians and Vegans

Well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets can provide excellent nutrition. They also require deliberate attention to nutrients that are more difficult to obtain in adequate amounts from plant foods alone.

Vitamin B12 is the clearest example for strict vegans. Iron, iodine, calcium, zinc, protein and omega-3 intake may also require attention depending on the foods being consumed. The quality of the diet is determined by what is actually eaten, not simply by whether it is plant-based.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy warrants specific nutritional guidance rather than a supplement program assembled from general wellness recommendations. Folic acid, iron, iodine, vitamin D, choline and other nutrients deserve individual consideration.

High-dose preformed vitamin A can be harmful during pregnancy, and many herbal products have limited pregnancy safety data. Prenatal supplementation should be discussed with the clinician providing pregnancy care.

People Taking GLP-1 Medications

Semaglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP-1-based medications can substantially reduce appetite and food intake. As meal size falls, it can become harder to consume enough protein, fiber, fluids and micronutrients.

Protein deserves particular attention because significant weight loss can include lean tissue as well as fat. Someone who previously ate three substantial meals may be consuming far less food after treatment begins, so the nutritional quality of what remains becomes increasingly important.

Supplements can help when intake genuinely falls short, but they should sit within a plan that also addresses protein intake, resistance training, hydration, digestive tolerance and body-composition monitoring.

What About Supplements for Healthy Aging?

Healthy aging is too broad an objective to answer with a single supplement stack. A more useful approach is to identify the part of aging being addressed and then consider the interventions with the best evidence for that outcome.

Muscle and Strength

Resistance training remains the central intervention for preserving and building strength. Adequate protein supports adaptation to training, and creatine can provide additional benefit for strength and lean tissue in many adults, including older adults.

A supplement intended to support muscle works best when the muscle is also being challenged to remain strong.

Bone

Bone health depends on calcium adequacy, vitamin D, protein, resistance exercise, impact activity when safe, balance, smoking and alcohol exposure, hormone status, medications and the presence or absence of osteopenia or osteoporosis.

Supplements can support the nutritional side of bone health, but they cannot determine whether bone density is declining. DEXA provides that information.

Cardiovascular Health

Supplement use should be considered within the larger cardiovascular picture. Blood pressure, ApoB, LDL cholesterol, Lp(a), diabetes, insulin resistance, smoking, physical activity, sleep, visceral fat and family history often have a much larger effect on cardiovascular risk than adding a general “heart health” supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acids have established physiological roles and specific clinical uses. Fiber-rich foods support cardiometabolic health, and genuine nutrient deficiencies should be corrected. These tools belong within cardiovascular risk reduction rather than serving as substitutes for it.

Brain Health

The brain depends on adequate nutrition. Vitamin B12 deficiency can affect neurologic function, omega-3 fatty acids are important components of neuronal cell membranes, and creatine is being studied for its role in brain energy metabolism.

Cognitive longevity also depends heavily on vascular health, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, sleep, hearing, exercise, social connection, alcohol exposure and other factors that cannot be addressed by supplementation alone.

Metabolic Health

Some supplements can make useful contributions to metabolic health, but their effects are generally modest compared with the larger influences of diet, physical activity, muscle mass, visceral fat, sleep and alcohol intake.

A supplement program should support those foundations rather than becoming the easiest part of the plan while the major drivers of metabolic health remain unchanged.

How Do You Choose a Quality Supplement?

Once there is a reasonable indication for supplementation, product quality deserves attention.

Read the Supplement Facts panel

Marketing claims are usually concentrated on the front of the bottle. The Supplement Facts panel tells you more about what is actually being supplied.

Check the ingredient, amount per serving, serving size and whether the same nutrient appears in several other products you already use.

Be cautious with proprietary blends

A proprietary blend may disclose the combined amount of several ingredients without identifying how much of each one is present. This makes it difficult to determine whether individual ingredients are present in meaningful amounts or to compare the formula with doses used in clinical research.

Look beyond the number of milligrams

A larger number on the label is not automatically an advantage. Nutrient form can affect absorption, tolerance, stability and clinical use. The preferred form depends on the nutrient and the reason it is being taken.

Ask about manufacturing and testing

Reasonable quality questions include:

  • Is the identity of the raw material verified?
  • Does the finished product contain the amount listed on the label?
  • Is it tested for relevant contaminants?
  • Are manufacturing practices documented?
  • Is the product stable through its stated shelf life?
  • Can ingredients and production lots be traced?
  • Is meaningful independent verification available where appropriate?

Programs such as USP Verification assess participating products against standards for identity, potency, manufacturing quality and specified contaminant limits. Independent verification cannot tell you whether a supplement is appropriate for a particular person, but it can provide useful information about manufacturing and whether the contents meet defined specifications.

Buy from a source you can identify

Authenticity, storage and supply chain are part of supplement quality. A legitimate product purchased from an authorized, traceable source offers more assurance than an unknown bottle moving through a marketplace where the seller, handling and storage history may be unclear.

Does “Professional Grade” Actually Mean Anything?

Terms such as “professional grade,” “practitioner grade,” “clinical strength,” “medical grade,” “natural” and “premium” are not proof that a supplement is effective or that the finished product contains what the label promises.

Product quality is better judged by raw-material sourcing, manufacturing standards, identity and potency testing, formulation, stability, contaminant testing and appropriate dosing. Even a very well-made product still needs a reasonable indication for use.

Our patients are not required to purchase supplements from us, and a well-made product from another reputable source does not become inferior simply because it was purchased elsewhere.

Quality should improve the supplement selected after a need has been identified. It should not be used to create the need.

Supplements You May Not Need

Part of reviewing supplements responsibly is deciding what can be removed as well as what might be useful.

BCAAs when you already consume enough complete protein

Branched-chain amino acids participate in muscle protein metabolism, but someone already consuming adequate amounts of high-quality protein may gain little from adding another isolated amino-acid product.

High-dose biotin because your hair is thinning

Hair loss has many causes. Unless biotin deficiency is plausible, increasing the dose is unlikely to explain why the hair is changing and may complicate interpretation of certain laboratory tests.

Iron without evidence that you need iron

Iron deficiency should be corrected, but routine supplementation without evidence of low iron or another clear indication can expose someone to unnecessary iron and may distract from finding the reason for symptoms.

Large antioxidant stacks because oxidation sounds harmful

Oxidative signaling is part of normal human physiology. An ingredient's ability to behave as an antioxidant in a laboratory experiment does not establish that taking a high dose will improve long-term health in people.

“Detox” products without a defined problem

The liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, lungs and other tissues continuously participate in the metabolism and elimination of compounds. Specific toxic exposures are genuine medical issues and may require targeted evaluation or treatment. Using the word “toxins” as a general explanation for nonspecific symptoms is a different claim and should not automatically lead to a supplement protocol.

Testosterone boosters instead of evaluating symptoms

Symptoms attributed to low testosterone should be evaluated in context. Medical history, sleep, metabolic health, medications, body composition, cardiovascular risk and properly obtained hormone testing when indicated provide more useful information than assuming an over-the-counter “booster” will address the cause.

Every promising longevity molecule at once

Large supplement stacks create a practical problem: when several compounds are started together, it becomes difficult to know whether anything is helping, whether one product is causing a side effect, or whether most of the stack is unnecessary.

Interesting mechanisms and early research can justify further study. They do not automatically justify taking every promising compound simultaneously.

If you already take several products, an inventory is often more useful than adding another one. Place everything you use in one place, including multivitamins, powders, gummies, herbs, sports products and combination formulas, and review each product using the same questions.

  1. What exactly am I taking?
    Write down the ingredient, dose and how often you take it.
  2. Why am I taking it?
    Identify the specific outcome or nutritional need the product is intended to address.
  3. What evidence supports that use?
    Consider whether the rationale comes from human clinical evidence, preliminary research, biological plausibility, testimonials or advertising.
  4. Do I have a reason to believe I need it?
    Look for a dietary gap, documented deficiency, life-stage consideration, clinical indication or reasonable health or performance objective.
  5. Could food provide what I need?
    If it can, compare the practicality and nutritional value of both approaches.
  6. Should anything be measured?
    Some supplements require little or no monitoring, while others are better guided by laboratory or clinical information.
  7. Does it duplicate or interact with anything else?
    Include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and every other supplement you use.

Anything in the cabinet without a clear purpose deserves a second look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vitamins should I take every day?

There is no universal list of vitamins that every healthy adult needs to take as supplements. Requirements vary with diet, age, pregnancy, medications, medical conditions, absorption and nutritional status. Some people benefit from a multivitamin or selected nutrients, while others can meet most of their needs through food.

Does everyone need a multivitamin?

No. A multivitamin can help cover smaller nutritional gaps when diet is inconsistent, calorie intake is low or certain foods are avoided, but it does not replace a varied diet. Nutrients supplied by fortified foods and other supplements also need to be included when evaluating total intake.

Should I get blood work before taking vitamins?

Not for every supplement. Testing is particularly useful when a deficiency is plausible and the result would affect treatment. Iron and vitamin B12 are common examples. Routine laboratory screening for every possible nutrient in an otherwise healthy person is generally unnecessary.

Should everyone test vitamin D?

No. The Endocrine Society's 2024 guideline recommends against routine 25-hydroxyvitamin D screening in generally healthy adults without another established indication for testing. Individual medical circumstances can still make testing appropriate.

Is it better to get vitamins from food or supplements?

Food should usually provide the nutritional foundation because it supplies nutrients together with protein, fiber and many other dietary components. Supplements are useful when food does not reliably meet a need or when a specific supplement has a clear evidence-based purpose.

Can supplements be harmful?

Yes. Excessive amounts of certain vitamins and minerals can cause toxicity. Supplements may also interact with medications, interfere with laboratory tests or be inappropriate in the setting of particular medical conditions.

Can I take too many supplements at once?

Yes. Duplication is common when several products contain the same nutrients. A multivitamin, B-complex, sleep formula, immune product and energy supplement may each provide some of the same vitamins or minerals. Total daily intake should be reviewed across all products.

Is professional-grade better than store-bought supplements?

The phrase “professional grade” alone does not establish quality. Manufacturing standards, ingredient identity, potency, formulation, contaminant testing, stability and supply-chain integrity are more useful ways to evaluate a product.

Are expensive supplements better?

Not necessarily. Some high-quality ingredients and manufacturing or testing processes genuinely cost more, but price by itself does not establish effectiveness, purity or suitability.

What supplements should women over 50 take?

There is no universal supplement stack for women over 50. Menopause and aging increase the importance of bone health, muscle, protein intake and cardiovascular risk. Calcium intake, vitamin D in appropriate circumstances, vitamin B12, protein and creatine may deserve consideration depending on diet, medical history and individual goals.

What supplements should men over 50 take?

There is no standard list for men over 50 either. Diet quality, protein intake, vitamin B12, vitamin D when appropriate, omega-3 intake and creatine may be relevant. Routine iron supplementation is generally not a default for adult men unless there is an identified indication.

Do people taking GLP-1 medications need vitamins?

Not automatically. GLP-1 medications can reduce food intake enough that protein, fiber, fluid and micronutrient intake need closer attention. Supplements may be useful when diet falls short, but nutrition, resistance training and muscle preservation should be addressed as part of the overall treatment plan.

Is magnesium good for everyone?

No supplement is appropriate for everyone. Magnesium is essential and some people have low dietary intake, but poor sleep or muscle cramps do not establish magnesium deficiency. Supplemental magnesium can also interact with certain medications and requires additional caution when kidney function is impaired.

Is creatine only for athletes?

No. Creatine has been studied extensively in sports performance and is increasingly studied in aging, muscle and other areas of physiology. Its most established benefits remain connected to muscle energy and resistance training, including in older adults.

Should I stop all my supplements?

Not simply because you take several. Review what each product contains, why you use it, whether it duplicates another product, whether monitoring is appropriate and whether it still serves a useful purpose. Supplements or nutrients being used to treat a diagnosed condition should not be stopped without discussing the change with the clinician managing that condition.
