Metagenics StayStrong+: Collagen, Creatine, Joint Health, and Healthy Aging
Collagen supplements have traditionally been marketed around skin, hair, and nails. Metagenics is taking a broader approach with its new StayStrong+ line, which combines several forms of collagen with ingredients such as creatine, vitamin D, magnesium, and vitamin C.
There are three products, and they are quite different. StayStrong+ Brain & Body provides 5 grams of creatine monohydrate and 2.5 grams of hydrolyzed collagen. Joint & Muscle combines 5 grams of creatine with 40 milligrams of UC-II® undenatured type II collagen. The 4-in-1 Whole Body Chew combines UC-II® with FORTIGEL® B, TENDOFORTE® B, and VERISOL® B.
The distinction between these ingredients is important. UC-II® is not simply a tiny serving of ordinary collagen powder. It is used in milligram quantities and has been studied through a different proposed mechanism involving immune signaling. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are generally used in much larger amounts and have been studied for different tissues and outcomes.
From a longevity perspective, the most compelling part of the new line may actually be the two formulas containing a full 5-gram serving of creatine. Muscle, strength, joints, connective tissue, and bone all become more important with age, and supplements are most useful when they support that larger physical system rather than being treated as a substitute for training, protein, and good nutrition.
Collagen Is a Category, Not a Single Ingredient
Walk through almost any supplement aisle and collagen appears to be remarkably simple. A tub contains collagen peptides, the label mentions skin and joints, and the serving size is usually measured in grams.
The physiology is more complicated.
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body. It is woven through cartilage, tendons, ligaments, bone, skin, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Different collagen products can vary by source, type, processing, peptide profile, dose, and intended biological effect.
That makes the new Metagenics StayStrong+ line more interesting than another generic collagen powder. Metagenics has divided the category according to different goals, with formulas for muscle and brain support, joint and muscle support, and broader connective-tissue support.
There is sensible biology behind that approach. There is also a reason to read each label separately rather than assuming that every ingredient carrying the word collagen is interchangeable.
StayStrong+ Brain & Body: Creatine Changes the Conversation
StayStrong+ Brain & Body is probably the least conventional collagen product of the three.
One scoop provides:
- 5 g creatine monohydrate
- 2.5 g hydrolyzed collagen, identified by Metagenics as VERISOL®
- 2,000 IU vitamin D3
- 100 mg Spectra™, a blend of fruit, vegetable, and herb concentrates
The creatine immediately gets our attention because 5 grams is a meaningful daily amount. Creatine has one of the largest bodies of evidence of any sports-nutrition supplement, and its relevance increasingly extends beyond athletic performance.
Creatine helps maintain phosphocreatine stores used for rapid ATP regeneration. Skeletal muscle is the obvious beneficiary, but the same energy system exists in the brain.
For healthy aging, the muscle side is particularly important. Strength and lean tissue tend to decline over time, especially without regular resistance training. Creatine can improve training capacity and may enhance strength and lean-mass outcomes when used alongside resistance exercise.

The cognitive research is promising but less settled. Creatine clearly participates in brain-energy metabolism, and human studies have reported benefits in certain measures of memory, attention, or mental performance. The evidence is not strong enough to treat creatine as a therapy for cognitive decline or to promise that it will eliminate brain fog.
The collagen component has a different purpose. VERISOL® has been studied primarily in relation to skin. Positive randomized trials have reported changes in measures such as elasticity, hydration, and wrinkle appearance at doses around 2.5 grams daily.
The broader collagen-for-skin literature is less uniform. A 2025 systematic review found that apparent benefits became much less convincing when researchers separated higher-quality studies and studies without pharmaceutical-industry funding. A 2026 systematic review reached a more moderate conclusion, finding possible benefits but noting substantial heterogeneity and a high risk of bias in much of the literature.
For that reason, we would view the collagen component as potentially useful rather than the main reason to consider this formula. The combination of 5 grams of creatine, vitamin D, and collagen makes Brain & Body more interesting as a healthy-aging product than as a beauty supplement.
StayStrong+ Joint & Muscle Takes a Different Approach
StayStrong+ Joint & Muscle is simpler.
One scoop provides:
- 5 g creatine monohydrate
- 40 mg UC-II® undenatured type II collagen
- 100 mg magnesium
- 100 mg vitamin C
- 600 IU vitamin D3
At first glance, 40 milligrams of collagen next to 5 grams of creatine looks almost insignificant. It is not.
UC-II® belongs to a very different category from hydrolyzed collagen peptides. Its studied daily amount is commonly 40 milligrams, and randomized human trials have examined that dose for joint comfort and function.
That makes Joint & Muscle a relatively straightforward formula. The creatine addresses muscle energy, training, strength, and recovery. UC-II® addresses the joint side through a different mechanism. Vitamin C is required for normal collagen synthesis, while vitamin D and magnesium participate in musculoskeletal physiology.
The 100 milligrams of magnesium should not be mistaken for a complete magnesium strategy, but it is a reasonable supporting amount within the formula.
For an adult who strength trains and is thinking about preserving both muscle and joint function, this may be the most practical product in the StayStrong+ line.
Why UC-II® Is Different From Ordinary Collagen Powder
Most hydrolyzed collagen products are broken into smaller peptides before they are consumed. Digestion breaks them down further, producing amino acids and peptides that enter circulation and may influence connective-tissue metabolism.
UC-II® is different because it is undenatured type II collagen. Its native three-dimensional structure is intentionally preserved.
The proposed effect involves oral tolerance. Small amounts of undenatured type II collagen interact with immune tissue associated with the gastrointestinal tract, which may influence immune responses involving type II collagen in joint cartilage.
This explains why the dose is measured in milligrams rather than grams.
Several randomized trials have evaluated approximately 40 milligrams per day. Studies involving exercise-related joint discomfort and knee osteoarthritis have reported improvements in some measures of pain, flexibility, or function.
Those findings do not mean UC-II® rebuilds damaged cartilage or reverses osteoarthritis. They do make it one of the more interesting specialized collagen ingredients for joint support.
The 4-in-1 Whole Body Chew
The third product takes the broadest approach.
StayStrong+ 4-in-1 Collagen Whole Body Chew combines four branded collagen ingredients:
- UC-II® undenatured type II collagen
- FORTIGEL® B collagen peptides
- TENDOFORTE® B collagen peptides
- VERISOL® B collagen peptides
The intended targets are different. UC-II® has been studied primarily for joints. FORTIGEL® peptides have been studied in relation to joint discomfort and cartilage. TENDOFORTE® has been developed around tendons and ligaments. VERISOL® has been studied primarily for skin.
The format is also considerably easier than another powder. Each berry-flavored chew is individually wrapped, and the current directions call for one chew twice daily with food.
Two chews provide 40 milligrams of UC-II®, which matches the amount commonly used in published UC-II® research.
The other collagen ingredients raise a more interesting question.
The Dose Still Deserves Attention
According to the current StayStrong+ label, one 4-in-1 chew contains 125 milligrams each of FORTIGEL® B, TENDOFORTE® B, and VERISOL® B. With the recommended two-chew daily serving, that becomes 250 milligrams of each ingredient.
Those amounts are considerably smaller than the doses used in many published studies involving the earlier branded peptide preparations.
Randomized trials of specific collagen peptides for activity-related joint discomfort have commonly used approximately 5 grams per day. Published tendon research has also used gram-level doses. VERISOL® skin studies commonly use approximately 2.5 grams daily.
That does not establish that the StayStrong+ chew is improperly dosed.
The label specifically identifies the newer ingredients as FORTIGEL® B, TENDOFORTE® B, and VERISOL® B. These may differ in peptide composition, concentration, formulation, or supporting evidence from earlier versions of the ingredients. Metagenics also describes the StayStrong+ line as using clinically studied ingredients at clinically studied doses.
What we have not found in the readily available published human literature is clear dose-matched evidence showing that 250 milligrams daily of each of these newer “B” ingredients produces the same outcomes reported in studies using gram-level amounts of the earlier peptide preparations.
Until that evidence is clearer, we would make a distinction between the evidence supporting the ingredient families and evidence supporting the exact finished formula.
That is not unusual in supplements. Many formulas are assembled from individually researched ingredients without the finished combination itself being tested in a large randomized trial.
It simply means the label deserves the same scrutiny as the ingredient names.
Creatine May Be More Important Than Collagen for Muscle
Two StayStrong+ products contain collagen, but neither uses collagen as its primary strategy for preserving skeletal muscle.
That is appropriate.
Collagen contains protein, but its amino-acid profile is very different from a complete dietary protein. It is particularly rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which are important structural amino acids. It contains relatively little of several essential amino acids required for robust muscle protein synthesis.
Creatine works through a different pathway entirely and has much stronger evidence for improving strength and training performance.
For someone concerned about sarcopenia and age-related muscle loss, the priorities remain resistance training, sufficient dietary protein, adequate calories, appropriate hormone and metabolic evaluation, recovery, and consistency.
Creatine can sit comfortably beside those priorities.
Collagen may have a separate role for connective tissues that allow muscles to do their job.
Collagen Should Not Replace Complete Protein
This point tends to disappear once collagen is marketed for “muscle.”
A serving of collagen should not be counted as equivalent to the same amount of whey, dairy protein, eggs, meat, fish, soy, or another complete protein source.
Muscle protein synthesis depends heavily on essential amino acids, including leucine. Collagen is not particularly rich in them.
For healthy aging, we generally think in terms of adequate total daily protein, often in the range of approximately 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight depending on the person, activity level, medical history, and goals.
Targeted collagen can be added to that foundation when there is a reason to use it. It should not displace the protein needed to preserve muscle.
Where StayStrong+ Fits in Healthy Aging
The most useful aspect of the StayStrong+ line is that it moves collagen away from being treated solely as a cosmetic supplement.
Aging affects the entire mechanical system.
Muscle produces force. Tendons transfer that force. Ligaments stabilize joints. Cartilage allows joint surfaces to move. Bone provides the framework. The nervous system coordinates movement, while metabolism and hormones influence how well these tissues recover and adapt.
When one part deteriorates, the rest of the system often feels it.
This is why muscle and connective-tissue health become increasingly important in midlife and later life. A person may have excellent cholesterol numbers and still lose independence if strength, balance, joints, and mobility decline.

Body composition can also provide information that a bathroom scale cannot. DEXA body-composition testing can measure lean tissue, fat mass, visceral fat, and bone density, which is especially useful when someone is trying to preserve muscle during aging, training, or weight loss.
Among the three StayStrong+ formulas, Brain & Body and Joint & Muscle stand out because both contain a full 5-gram serving of creatine alongside ingredients aimed at other aspects of healthy aging.
The 4-in-1 chew is appealing for convenience and for people primarily interested in connective tissues. We would like to see more published information explaining how the newer low-dose FORTIGEL® B, TENDOFORTE® B, and VERISOL® B ingredients relate to the gram-level dosing used in earlier studies.
None of these products replaces resistance training, protein, sleep, adequate nutrition, or evaluation of persistent joint or tendon problems.
They are supplements in the literal sense of the word: additions to the work that preserves strength and movement over time.
