Product Overview:

Pendulum® Metabolic Daily is the retail version of Pendulum's five-strain metabolic microbiome probiotic. Each capsule provides 300 million AFU from five complementary organisms, including live Akkermansia muciniphila. The formula is built around gut-barrier biology, microbial fermentation, cross-feeding, and production of short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate rather than simply maximizing the number of strains or organisms on the label.*

Pendulum® Metabolic Daily reflects a newer approach to probiotic formulation. Its five organisms were selected because they occupy different roles within the intestinal ecosystem.

The best known is live Akkermansia muciniphila, a mucus-associated organism that has become an important focus of metabolic microbiome research. Pendulum pairs it with organisms involved in carbohydrate fermentation, microbial cross-feeding, and production of short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate.*

Metabolic Daily is available in 30- and 90-capsule sizes, with one capsule providing the full daily serving.

Five Organisms, One Microbial Ecosystem

Each capsule contains a 300 million AFU probiotic blend with:

  • Clostridium butyricum WB-STR-0006
  • Clostridium beijerinckii WB-STR-0005
  • Bifidobacterium infantis
  • Anaerobutyricum hallii WB-STR-0008
  • Akkermansia muciniphila WB-STR-0001

What makes the formula interesting is not simply the number of organisms. These bacteria participate in different aspects of intestinal metabolism and can interact with one another through a process known as microbial cross-feeding.

Live Akkermansia muciniphila

Akkermansia muciniphila naturally lives close to the intestinal mucus layer. Its location at the interface between the microbiome and intestinal epithelium has made it one of the more closely studied next-generation organisms in gut and metabolic research.

Lower Akkermansia abundance has been associated with several metabolically unfavorable states, and human intervention studies involving different Akkermansia preparations are beginning to provide a more useful picture of its biology.

Metabolic Daily contains Pendulum's live Akkermansia muciniphila WB-STR-0001.

Butyrate and the Gut Barrier

Several organisms in Metabolic Daily participate directly or indirectly in pathways that produce butyrate, one of the major short-chain fatty acids generated by intestinal bacterial fermentation.

Butyrate is an important energy source for colon cells and participates in normal intestinal-barrier, immune, and metabolic signaling.*

This is one reason probiotic formulation cannot be judged solely by the largest AFU or CFU number. What the organisms do, and how they interact with neighboring bacteria, also matters.

What Is Microbial Cross-Feeding?

The intestinal microbiome functions as a community. One organism can consume a dietary substrate and produce a metabolite that becomes fuel for another organism. That second organism may then produce another compound, including short-chain fatty acids.

Bifidobacterium infantis, for example, participates in carbohydrate metabolism and can generate substrates used by other organisms in the intestinal ecosystem. Anaerobutyricum hallii and other organisms in the formula participate in additional fermentation pathways.

Metabolic Daily was designed around these interactions rather than treating each probiotic organism as if it functioned independently.*

The Gut–Metabolism Connection

The intestinal microbiome does considerably more than help digest food. Gut bacteria participate in fermentation, bile-acid metabolism, intestinal-barrier function, immune signaling, and production of metabolites that communicate with the body.

Short-chain fatty acids and other intestinal metabolites can also interact with receptors and enteroendocrine cells involved in normal glucose, appetite, and metabolic signaling.*

This physiology is one reason the metabolic microbiome has become such an active area of research. It does not mean that a probiotic should be treated as a medication for diabetes, obesity, or insulin resistance.

What Does the Human Research Show?

Pendulum has published randomized human research using a closely related five-organism formulation in adults with type 2 diabetes. That research found improvements in post-meal glucose control and demonstrated that a deliberately assembled microbial ecosystem can produce measurable metabolic changes in humans.

The research formulation was not identical to today's retail Metabolic Daily. It used the same five bacterial species but differed in formulation and dosing and is more directly associated with Pendulum's Glucose Control product line.

Metabolic Daily should therefore not be described as clinically proven to lower A1C or treat diabetes. The study is useful because it supports the biological rationale behind this five-organism approach.

For a deeper discussion of the research, Akkermansia, butyrate, and the difference between the retail and professional formulas, see Pendulum® Metabolic Daily and Metabolic Daily PRO: Live Akkermansia, Butyrate, and the 5-Strain Microbiome.

Metabolic Daily vs. Metabolic Daily PRO

Pendulum offers two versions of this five-organism formula. They contain the same five organisms, but they provide different total labeled potency.

Feature Metabolic Daily Metabolic Daily PRO
Total Potency 300 million AFU 1 billion AFU
Organisms Five-strain ecosystem Same five-strain ecosystem
Suggested Use 1 capsule daily 1 capsule daily
Available Sizes 30 and 90 capsules 30 capsules

Metabolic Daily PRO provides approximately 3.3 times the total labeled AFU per capsule. That should not be interpreted to mean it produces 3.3 times the clinical benefit. The two finished formulations have not been compared head-to-head in a clinical outcomes trial.

Who May Consider Metabolic Daily?

  • Adults interested in daily gut microbiome support*
  • People looking specifically for a probiotic containing live Akkermansia muciniphila*
  • Those interested in microbial cross-feeding and butyrate-related pathways*
  • Adults focused on the relationship between intestinal and metabolic health*
  • Those who prefer a targeted five-organism formulation rather than selecting a probiotic solely by strain count

What Metabolic Daily Is Not

Metabolic Daily is not a GLP-1 medication, diabetes treatment, or stand-alone weight-loss product.

The microbiome participates in normal endogenous GLP-1 and metabolic signaling, but that physiology should not be equated with the pharmacologic effects of medications such as semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Likewise, research involving other Akkermansia formulations or Pendulum's Glucose Control product should not automatically be transferred to Metabolic Daily.

Important Considerations

Some people notice temporary changes in gas, bloating, stool frequency, or bowel habits when introducing a new probiotic.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medications, immunocompromised, or managing a significant gastrointestinal or medical condition, discuss probiotic use with a healthcare professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pendulum Metabolic Daily?

Metabolic Daily is Pendulum's retail five-strain daily probiotic. Each capsule provides 300 million AFU and contains live Akkermansia muciniphila along with four complementary organisms involved in microbial fermentation, cross-feeding, and short-chain fatty acid biology.*

How is Metabolic Daily different from Metabolic Daily PRO?

Both contain the same five organisms. Retail Metabolic Daily provides 300 million total AFU per capsule and is available in 30- and 90-capsule sizes. Metabolic Daily PRO provides 1 billion AFU per capsule in a 30-capsule professional formulation.

Is Metabolic Daily PRO more effective than retail Metabolic Daily?

That has not been established. PRO has a higher labeled AFU count, but the two products have not been compared head-to-head in a clinical outcomes trial. A higher organism count does not automatically translate into proportionally greater clinical benefit.

Does Metabolic Daily contain live Akkermansia?

Yes. It contains live Akkermansia muciniphila WB-STR-0001.

How many organisms are in Metabolic Daily?

The current formula contains five: Akkermansia muciniphila, Clostridium butyricum, Clostridium beijerinckii, Anaerobutyricum hallii, and Bifidobacterium infantis.

Why is it called a 4-in-1 probiotic if it contains five organisms?

Pendulum's “4-in-1” description refers to the product's broader areas of support, not the number of probiotic organisms in the capsule. The current formulation contains five organisms.

What are AFUs?

AFU stands for Active Fluorescent Units, a method used to quantify viable bacterial cells. Retail Metabolic Daily provides 300 million AFU per capsule.

What is butyrate?

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced by selected intestinal bacteria during fermentation. It is an important energy source for colon cells and participates in normal gut-barrier, immune, and metabolic signaling.*

Has Metabolic Daily been clinically shown to lower A1C?

Metabolic Daily itself has not been established in a randomized clinical trial as an A1C-lowering treatment. Pendulum has published human research using a closely related five-organism formulation, but those findings should not be treated as direct proof of an A1C effect from retail Metabolic Daily.

Is Metabolic Daily a GLP-1 alternative?

No. The microbiome participates in normal endogenous GLP-1 signaling, but probiotics do not reproduce the pharmacologic effects of GLP-1-based medications.

How do I take Metabolic Daily?

The current suggested use is one capsule daily with food, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Does Metabolic Daily need refrigeration?

Pendulum recommends refrigeration for optimal quality.
